Freight
Most businesses are created because there is, in some form or fashion, a void that needs to be filled. Down-Right Freight is no different, as it was created to solve a problem that I was facing.
I was born and raised in Salem Ohio, (I am 1 of 9 children) the oldest daughter of a truck driver and an entrepreneur in his own right. I grew up riding down the road with my dad, and helping him every chance I would get; whether it was helping hold the map or folding tarps I was proud to be part of a trucker’s family. After high school, I tried my hand in some other industries and even graduated with an associated degree as a dental assistant. I soon realized that my heart was in the trucking industry but I did not want to be a truck driver. I asked my dad if I could work for him to understand the facets of the industry from more of a business perspective. He agreed and I worked for him for 6 years doing a wide array of tasks. From ordering permits and interacting with the drivers to learning how to bid jobs and invoicing, I learned the ins and outs of the business.
As a young female entrepreneur and the daughter of a truck driver, It didn’t take long to realize that there were two keys components needed in order to grow in this industry:
1.) You had to be competitive while pricing jobs.
2.) You had to guarantee dependable service by finding the best drivers and paying them a premium to stick around and take pride in their job.
I had an edge on both of these components because I had a relationship with the truck drivers and I know their strengths, so I could set them up for success when assigning them loads to haul. I also understand the pricing aspect because I knew what truckers felt was a fair price.

Although I loved my job, working for my dad, I was hungry for more and I dreamed of living in Texas. I knew I could not keep my job and achieve my goals in life. Only now, I was equipped with the knowledge, understanding, and contacts to pave my own way. I decided that by starting my own brokerage, I could be free to move while continuing to maintain relevance in the industry and capitalize on my experience and relationships that I had built. It has been a great fit and my business has steadily grown since conception.

My husband Jason and I, with our son Drew, live on a small ranch east of Dallas. When we are not moving freight, our hobbies include barrel racing, calf roping, as well as raising horses and cattle. Our vision is for Down-Right Freight to financially support our family while also acting as a tool to teach our kids ethics, loyalty, hard work, and first-hand experience of keeping healthy and long-lasting relationships.
